Paper Ice Skate Winter Paper Craft

Paper Ice Skate Winter Paper Craft

Hi Crafty Friends! Amanda here from Lace Designs Studio. This time of year is my favorite, cozy sweaters, hot cocoa, and ice skating! When I stumbled upon this paper ice skate SVG from SVG Cuts, I just had to make it - it’s the perfect addition to your winter decor.

Paper Ice Skate Instructions

To begin this project, you’ll need to upload the SVG into Cricut (or your preferred cutting machine). You can resize the file to be bigger or smaller, but keep in mind to do so while it is grouped so everything fits perfectly together.

After resizing, if you choose to, make sure to ungroup and attach each piece with its respective cut/score lines.

I started my assembly with the main piece that has holes cut out for the laces and the “tongue” of the skate. I folded along all the scored/dashed lines and began gluing from the bottom on one side, and working my way upward before repeating on the opposite side.

Although I love using my hot glue gun, I opted for Bearly Arts liquid glue here because it would hold better against the textured glitter. Because of this, I waited a little longer for dry time, but the pieces held together perfectly. Once the side panels were dried, I flipped the skate over so I could glue the reinforcement tabs along the top two cutouts on each side. I glued them with the glitter outward facing so that the texture wouldn’t cause an issue - this was fine as these are inside the skate and invisible to the eye once assembled.

After, I continued adding the side panels and a layer over the tongue of the skate. I chose to use glitter throughout the skate for a wintery look, but you can also mix different colors or pattern paper here. Once the side panels are attached, it’s time to string the laces. I used tweezers to help me get the ribbon through the small holes. I probably used about 48” of ribbon (I didn’t measure it) but it was enough to lace the skate, and have a little extra in case I wanted to hang them. I also cut the excess string once I was about 90% done with the skate in case I wanted to change the length.

Next, we’ll be working on the side panels that complete the skate. You’ll notice tabs that have squares, rectangles and triangles. We’ll use those as guides to know which panels get attached to the exact pieces they belong to and repeat for both sides of the skate.

Now we’re moving on to the back portion of the skate and the blade portion - my favorite! I used the beautiful holographic foil and holographic sequin papers. I used the foil as the back layer and glued the two pieces together. I decided to use foamies under the sequin paper to add some depth, but this is totally optional. I set the blade aside and folded along the scored lines for the back panel, and added glue to attach to each side of the skate.

Finally, we’ll be attaching the heel of the skate onto the bottom and then attaching the blade. The bottom part of the heel was originally made with holes to fit brads, according to the creator of the file. I opted not to use brads, so I covered the holes with some pearls purchased on Amazon. You can contour these out in your design software if you choose to not use brads or pearls as this is the very bottom of the skate. You can finish up the skate by designing as is, or as you prefer. I kept it pretty simple so that it matches my Christmas decor, but I cannot wait to see how you make yours!
